The primary goals of surgical oncology include:

1. Complete Tumor Removal

Surgical oncologists aim to completely remove cancerous tumors from the body whenever possible. This may involve removing the primary tumor as well as nearby lymph nodes or tissues affected by cancer.

Debulking Tumors

In cases where complete tumor removal is not feasible, surgical oncologists may perform debulking surgeries to remove a portion of the tumor. This can help reduce tumor size and alleviate symptoms.

Biopsy

Surgical oncologists perform biopsies to obtain tissue samples for diagnosis. Biopsies help determine the type of cancer, its stage, and its specific characteristics, which are crucial for determining the most appropriate treatment plan.

Palliative Surgery

Surgical oncologists may also perform palliative surgeries to relieve symptoms and improve the quality of life for patients with advanced cancer. These surgeries focus on reducing pain, improving function, and managing complications caused by cancer.

Multidisciplinary Approach

Surgical oncologists work closely with other specialists, such as medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists, and pathologists, to develop comprehensive treatment plans tailored to each patient's specific needs.

Overall, surgical oncology plays a vital role in the comprehensive management of cancer, offering patients the best possible outcomes through expert surgical care combined with other cancer treatments.
